My Seasonal Allergy Herbal Treatment Plan

Natural healing remedies for seasonal allergies - herbs, resources, and visualizations that work!

by Sarah Petruno, Shamana

Confession: I'm a shaman. . . and I have seasonal allergies.

I've being dealing with allergies for the better part of 15 years, and back in college and in my early twenties it got so bad that I had sinus surgery and a tonsillectomy at age 24.

After seeing a ridiculous number of doctors and specialists and every single allergy medicine on the market failing to work for me, I was deemed a lost cause by the medical community and I was given the final resort of surgery.

I had the surgery.

And after 8 grueling weeks of recovery, it didn't freaking work. Sinus allergies came right back.

At the time, I lived in San Diego and I was surrounded by an abundance of air pollution on top of the year-round pollen. When the surgery didn't work, it was speculated that the doctor did a poor job, and I resigned myself to feel crappy forever. Not a single doctor could figure out and it was clear they'd given up.

Since then, I've been dealing with allergies on and off. I moved away from San Diego, and the pollen wasn't so bad.

Until this year. THIS YEAR I moved to the east coast and when spring came in with a fury, I got hit hard. HIT. HARD.

Watery eyes, head and sinus congestion, itchy throat - you name it. If it's a seasonal allergy symptom, I had it.

During the height of the symptoms, I realized that this THING that was never healed in my earlier life was coming back to present itself, with intensity, now that I was practicing as a shaman.

Touché, spirit guides. A lesson was at hand.

I said to myself, "OKAY. I have to figure this out."

I struggled with this when I was two feet in the world of western medicine, and now, doing a 180 into the world of shamanic medicine, I knew this was a lesson for me to figure out how to heal myself, shamanically.

I asked my guides to help me. Together we created a healing plan. I did it for a few weeks - and it worked!

Now that it's all tested and I've identified the critical players, I'm sharing it with you!

Below, you'll find a list of all the things that I did to treat my allergies, a brief note on why they were used, and with what frequency I did them. Yes, I do and did all of them.

Use at your own risk. I'm not a doctor. I'm just a lowly shaman who healed myself when 10+ doctors couldn't ;).

Natural healing remedies for seasonal allergies - herbs, resources, and visualizations that work!

My Seasonal Allergy Remedies

1. Elderberry Syrup

An allergic response is a result of a challenged immune system. Elderberry syrup acts to support the immune system. I take 1 Tbsp twice per day, of this recipe.

2. Nettle Powder Capsules

When I was breastfeeding my first child, I relied heavily on a homeopathic nettle supplement to boost milk supply. I did not experience allergies during this time. Nettles are an amazing whole body tonic and immune booster, aiding the body tremendously when it comes to allergens. I take 1 capsule 2x per day during allergy season. This is the brand I use

3. Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver supports the immune system, something I talked more in depth about in the May 2016 edition of The Shaman Life. I take 1 tsp 2x per day during allergy season. This is the brand I use

4. Turmeric Capsules

To help support and balance the body's inflammation response. I use 1 capsule 2x per day during allergy season, of this brand

5. My Seasonal Allergy Support Tea

THIS ONE is the #1 one, must have on my list. I learned that the hard way. On days where I forgot to make this tea, I was hurting big time. This is an herbal tea blend mastered and created by my husband, Tom, an herbalist. It contains: nettle, linden, skullcap, peppermint, eleuthero, catnip, and licorice. I mix the herbs ahead of time, and make my tea for the next day the night before. I drink 3 total cups of this per day, 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups at night. Get the recipe for free below!

6. Energy Flush Visualization

When the allergy symptoms started, I could see in my mind that what I really needed to do was a big time energy flush, but, I felt too crappy to do it myself. I tried looking for a local energy healer in my area to give a girl some help, but was unable to find one. Then, I realized I could ask my guides and angels to help me out. On 3 consecutive nights, I intentionally called in my guides and angels and asked that they please flush and clear my energy, from head to toe. I visualized them standing over me, and then let them get to work. IT WORKED.

If you can't visualize, not to worry, check out this healing meditation

(This meditation is given in detail in the Day to Day Shamanism Class. And, for Shaman Life subscribers - this is an adapted version of the 2nd part of the All-in-One Healing Technique available in the Starter Kit, or the Energy Detox meditation in the May 2016 edition, focusing on the ENT area).

7. Local Raw Pollen/Honey

I have found that local raw pollen and honey does help the body's internal response to allergens. Think like a vaccine, of honey and pollen, for allergens. Thank the bees. Raw, unfiltered, and as local as possible. Farmer's markets are your best friend for finding it. Or, get your own bees! I use honey daily in my tea, and take the pollen by spoonful once in the mornings.

8. Neti Pot

My time with the ENT specialists wasn't a complete waste. I learned that because of the level of environmental pollutants that we're now facing as humans, one of the best things you can do is to flush all the irritants out of your body, physically, with sinus irrigation. I did this almost every night for 2-3 years. I used to have an electric system, which is nice, but a regular ol' neti pot works fine. This is the one I currently use and I now flush every 2-3 days.

OK, so now that you have THE LIST - how do you put it all together? After testing this for about 2 months, this is the system I've settled into for the long haul.

BONUS: For Fall Allergies I have added -

Cod Liver Oil (this one), Gelatin (this is what I use), and a Good Probiotic (this is the one I take) - for overall gut health, inflammatory support, and coating of the inner linings of the stomach, throat, intestines, and the digestive system.

And Elecampane Tincture for lung support. (This is the one I use)

Here's the system I use

To start

If you're first starting this regimen at the height of allergy season, do as many of the things on the list that you can manage. This helps get everything under control for the initial flush and immune system bolstering. I did this:

  • 1 TBSP Elderberry syrup
  • 1 Probiotic
  • 1 dose Cod Liver Oil
  • 1 Nettle Capsule
  • 1 Turmeric Capsule
  • 1 tsp colloidal silver
  • 1 dropper echinacea
  • 1 dropper elecampane
  • 1-1.5 C of Allergy Tea, hot or iced, sweetened when warm (NOT hot) with local raw honey. Gelatin Added to hot tea
  • Neti Pot - morning or night every other day only (mostly because I hate doing it, otherwise more often)

  • 1 TBSP Elderberry syrup
  • 1 Nettle Capsule
  • 1 Turmeric Capsule
  • 1 tsp colloidal silver
  • 1 dropper echinacea
  • 1 dropper elecampane
  • 1-1.5 C of Allergy Tea, hot or iced, sweetened when warm (NOT hot) with local raw honey
  • Energy Flush Visualization before bed 3 days in a row, then every 2 days

Do this for 2 weeks - 1 month until you start to notice your symptoms dissipating and your condition stabilizing.

For the duration of allergy season.

  • 1 Nettle Capsule
  • 1 Turmeric Capsule
  • 1 Probiotic Capsule
  • 1 dose Code Liver Oil
  • 1-1.5 C of Allergy Tea, hot or iced, sweetened when warm (NOT hot) with local raw honey
  • Neti Pot - morning or night every couple of days (mostly because I hate doing it, otherwise more often)

  • 1 Nettle Capsule
  • 1 Turmeric Capsule
  • 1-1.5 C of Allergy Tea, hot or iced, sweetened when warm (NOT hot) with local raw honey
  • Energy Flush Visualization 1x per week

Ok! That. Is. It.

I feel it's important to add here that I don't necessarily do everything, every day forever. I play around with it. I sometimes up the neti pot to 2x a day when it's bad, or I forgo elderberry syrup for a while until one morning, I feel like I need to start taking it again. I play with it and see what I can add, and subtract, and when. Seasons change. Plants change. Pollens change. What works for me won't necessarily work exactly for you, because our bodies are different.

I encourage you to find and use a system that works for you, which may not be exactly mine and probably won't be.

And, as a final disclaimer, I AM breastfeeding while doing all of this. My husband is a herbalist and he's pretty militant on what is and is not safe for breastfeeding mothers, but as always, follow my advice at your own risk and discuss with your doctor because we are not doctors and can't legally give medical advice.

It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't too much work once you get a system going. And the best part is, it worked. For me. And I hope it'll work for you, too.
